Farben Japans Holzschnitte aus der Sammlung StaBi

This exhibition is most likely for free. Probably no ticket is needed. The exhibition “Farben Japans Holzschnitte aus der Sammlung der Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek” showcases masterpieces of Japanese color woodblock printing from three centuries, spanning from the Edo period to the 20th-century shin-hanga movement. Visitors can explore approximately 130 original works, including illustrated books, rare triptychs, and single-sheet prints by renowned artists such as Hokusai, Utamaro, Hiroshige, Yoshitoshi, and Hasui. Highlights include Hokusai’s iconic “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” and other notable pieces from his “Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji” series. The exhibition also features large-format reproductions that delve into various themes and showcase the intricate details of the prints. This is the first time the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek has dedicated an exhibition solely to its Japanese color woodblock prints.
